Harvest Festival

Last Friday was Trinity's annual Harvest Festival and my first opportunity to enjoy this event.  Here are highlights from some of my favorite moments of the night.  

"The Sales Team"

Our kids were selling glow sticks as a fundraiser and some of the students (ie- Carlton and Luke in the first picture) were the "sales team supervisors."  Carlton in particular was so serious about his job.  He reminded me of a modern day business man.  The second picture is the girl's expression upon hearing the "rules" of sales.

"The Cake Walk"

Like all good church events there was a cake walk.  For those who aren't as familiar with this phenomenon, everyone chooses a number and stand on it.  Usually there is music to follow while everyone walks one direction on the numbers.  When the music stops you land on your number.  The conductors select a random number (in this case from the box) and someone wins a cake!  However, these ladies were having trouble reading the numbers and it made for quite an entertaining sight hearing them banter back and forth as to what number was just pulled.  Such a great job ladies!

"Hanging Out with Friends"

I just love watching my students enjoy the fellowship of their friends.  Trinity is such a big family and you can tell as you watch the kids interact with one another.

"Booth Leaders"

Many of the students were involved in booths.  Watching them building their leadership skills is awesome!  Plus, they are learning how to serve others.  Wow, what character building!

"Letter to Soldiers"

My favorite booth was Mrs. Broome's.  She brought supplies and encouraged the kids to write letters of appreciation to a soldier.  Wow, what an impact her booth must have made.  Just another example of the character building that I love at Trinity!  Plus, one really great teacher to look up to.

Small Face!!!

This week's trip to Alpine Camp was an amazing experience! While trying to chronicle the experience via my camera and 500+ photos, we came up with this catch phrase... "small face"! Students would then attempt to make their face as small as possible. These are some of the hilarious results!

Powerful Phrases

Recently my students completed their first writing assignment... applause please!  They each wrote a descriptive paragraph on their favorite place in the whole wide world. This year the school is using a brand new English curriculum (WriteSource) and the students are doing great!  I'm so proud.  On our "Publishing" day of the Writing Process the students spent some time celebrating their classmates accomplishments by reading their paragraphs and writing down "Powerful Phrases" that stood out to them in their classmates' writing.  Fun huh?

After this, they got into groups and made posters of these phrases to hang around the room.  

It was super fun to take pictures of them doing this, because well... they are Junior Highers and they have HUGE personalities!

Case in point. 

Here are some really sweet 8th grade girls.  Any chance to work in groups with their friends is like celebrating their Birthday... no like Christmas! 

Anyways, I was very proud of them and now I have a display of their "Creative Descriptive Paragraphs" on a bulletin board.  The second part of the assignment was to combine the words of your paragraph with a picture representing the 'favorite place.' 

By now we've moved onto writing the Narrative Essays.  These will be a blast to Publish as they are writing first person narratives from the perspective of a toy they brought to class.  Eventually they will give the toy along with the published essay to one of our Preschoolers.  Oh, I'll take pictures that day (for sure!)

Fresh Faces

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to meet many of my new students at a Jr. High Teachers/Parents/Students luncheon coordinated by Mrs. Hedman.  What a fun opportunity!  It was thrilling to see my new students little personalities come forth throughout the short time together.  There were a lot of 8th grade boys and 7th grade girls who showed up (still looking forward to seeing some of those 7th grade boys and 8th grade girls.)

It was also a huge blessing to get to meet a couple parents.  I've been overwhelmed this first week of orientation with how much Trinity truly is a family and meeting some of the Moms and Dads who make this place remarkable was such a gift!  As I continue to set up our classroom and plan our lessons for the future weeks, I'm getting more and more excited to finally meet all of my new fresh faces!
